What are those black stains on my roof?

Gloeocapsa magma, often referred to as black algae, is a photosynthetic cyanobacteria. It begins as an airborne spore which lands on your roof and then feeds on the moisture and calcium carbonate in your shingles.  This hardy bacteria has  the ability to form a dark pigmented outer sheath to protect it from the sun’s ultraviolet rays.   It also produces a secretion that allows it to stick to the roof surface. This “black algae” has gained notoriety in the Southeastern United States and is spreading at an epidemic rate throughout the Northern Midwest. As the algae colonies accumulate on your roof, it becomes more noticeable as ugly black stains and streaks.

Why is it there and can it damage my roof?

Rising humidity and temperatures combined with increased bacteria spores promote this widespread condition.

Fiberglass shingles are manufactured with limestone as filler in the asphalt. This material is the perfect food source for algae. These shingles also hold moisture and organic nutrients "bacteria food" longer, especially on the north-side of the roof (where it usually begins to show first).  As a Gloeocapsa magma colony grows; older algae decompose and retain more moisture.  This enables the entire colony to grow even more rapidly causing stains to become heavier and more prominent.

This bacteria causes substantial destruction revolving around shingle decay and loss of reflective power. Over time, Gloeocapsa magma begins to break down the contents of the shingles and this decreases the roof’s ability to reflect ultraviolet rays of light.  The quality of the shingles slowly diminish causing the corners to curl up and form raised humps on the surface. This ultimately can result is broken or disintegrated shingles. In the long run, this has been known to increase air conditioning bills and lead to more frequent roof repair and reconstruction.

As Gloeocapsa magma continues  to grow and spread on your roof, other types of fungi begin to grow  and form called lichens.  Eventually moss and lichens may form feeding off the bacteria and it’s moisture.  Roof manufacturer experts conclude that the algae is harmful and if left untreated; will cause premature aging, rotting, and granule loss.
